Saratoga County: Tenant Mountain

As we walked in the direction of Tenant Mountain from the Hamlet of Harrisburg in Warren County, my hiking companion, Al Bushnell, said: "I wonder if this is like roads where they cross county lines? Will the trail's conditions change?" We were approaching Tenant from the county to the north because all other roads into this remote location in the northwest corner of Saratoga County seemed to stop at gates with posted signs. We began to think we couldn't get there from here. The Ohmer Mountain Club seemed to hold much of the land below the mountain. Even trails leading to Tenant Creek Falls from the west—trails marked by the Department of Environmental Conservation and described in Adirondack Mountain Club guides—ended at private property about three miles away from the highest point in Saratoga County. The mountain offered us a stunning vista of the lower Adirondacks, looking north over Harrisburg Lake and to the mountains beyond. It is said to remind Polish guests of the Harrisburg Lake Club and Resort of southern Poland. It may seem like an unlikely place to vacation—an end-of-the-world location—but it proved to be the gateway to another county and a foreign land.
