Waterville Valley Ski Resort

Unspecified • 0 mi • 2020 ft

This tidy resort and town offers parking lot–to–mountaintop coddling, making for a ski experience that’s sanitized but ultimately satisfying. When former U.S. ski team star Tom Corcoran— the resort’s founder—first cut these trails in the ’60s, those at most New England resorts were narrow and twisting. Today almost every resort worth its boomer business has moved to wider, highly groomed boulevards similar to those at Waterville Valley. The broad, well-groomed trails of Mt. Tecumseh and the neatly maintained condos of the adjacent village were made with families in mind. And with weekly packages costing less than $400 (including lift tickets), it’s affordable for groups and couples to pack up and get away, too. Although the main village is about a mile from the slopes, the efficient shuttle makes the commute pain-less and a car unnecessary. At first the village—the focus of Waterville Valley’s less-than-torrid nightlife—seems sterile, with a two-level collection of small specialty stores, restaurants, and bars. But the typically taciturn New Hampshire locals become positively garrulous when dealing with visitors from out of state. It’s true that the village still lacks a bit of character, but the characters it does have more than compensate. Waterville Valley has depth as well. Without ever leaving the village, you can ice-skate, swim, sled, cross-country ski, play tennis indoors, snowshoe, work out, or lounge in a hot tub. This chapter contains a thorough description of the resort including how to get there, mountain statistics, trail profiles, lodging, dining, nightlife, and entertainment.
