Kanab Creek

South of the town of Kanab, Kanab Creek carves a deep and narrow gully, perhaps 75 feet deep and varying in width up to 100 yards or so. The bottom of this gully supports a well-developed riparian zone with some marshy areas and a band of cottonwoods, Russian olives, and of course tamarisk that follows the stream course. The area seems to attract enough songbirds, some of which are more characteristic of Arizona, to make this an interesting stop. Specialty birds: Willow Flycatcher; Green-tailed and Spotted Towhees. Other key birds: Turkey Vulture; Gambel’s Quail; Spotted Sandpiper; Greater Roadrunner; Barn Owl; Black and Say’s Phoebes; Ashthroated Flycatcher; Violet-green, Northern Rough-winged, and Cliff Swallows; Common Raven; Northern Mockingbird; Yellow and Yellowrumped Warblers; Common Yellowthroat; Brewer’s Sparrow; Blue Grosbeak; Brewer’s Blackbird; Lesser Goldfinch.
