The 955-acre Lake Whitney State Park lies along the east shore of Whitney Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers–managed lake on the Brazos River that covers 23,550 acres, with a shoreline of 225 miles. The area is located in the Grand Prairie subregion of the Blackland Prairie Natural Region. A 2,000-foot airstrip, along with accommodations for small airplanes, is available within the park, as are nature and bike trails, boating, fishing, and swimming. Key birds: Greater Roadrunner is present year-round. Wood Duck, Chuck-will’s-widow, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Bell’s Vireo, Painted Bunting, and Dickcissel occur insummer. Common Loon; Bald Eagle; Horned Lark; Fox and Harris’s Sparrows; and McCown’s, Lapland, and Chestnut-collared Longspurs can usually be found in winter. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, a detailed map, and helpful general information.
