Lake Meredith National Recreation Area - Fritch Texas Bird Watching Sites

Lake Meredith is in the geographic center of the Texas Panhandle. The 45,000-acre national recreation area offers extensive recreational opportunities, from boating and fishing to birding and backcountry hiking. Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, situated along the south-central edge of the recreation area, contains extensive quarries that were worked by prehistoric peoples, perhaps 11,500 years ago. Several associated ruins are found throughout the dual areas and range in age from historic cabins to a few paleosites. Key birds: Golden Eagle, Scaled Quail, Chukar, Greater Roadrunner, Rock and Canyon Wrens, Curve-billed Thrasher, and Rufous-crowned Sparrow are present year-round. Mississippi Kite, Swainson’s Hawk, Virginia Rail, Burrowing Owl, Red-headed Woodpecker, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, and Cassin’s Sparrow occur in summer. Common Goldeneye; Common Merganser; Ferruginous and Rough-legged Hawks; Bald Eagle; Long-eared Owl; Mountain Bluebird; Townsend’s Solitaire; American Tree, Fox, and Harris’s Sparrows; and Lapland Longspur can usually be found in winter. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, a detailed map, and helpful general information.
