El Cariso Nature Trail - San Juan Capistrano California Hikes

El Cariso Nature Trail is an ideal short family hike. With striking vistas to the north, west, and south, it winds around a large knoll above the El Cariso Ranger Station, which is just south of the Ortega Highway. The trail is a great way to familiarize yourself with some of the natural history of the Santa Ana Mountains. In the spring, a variety of wildflowers can be observed, along with a wide variety of coastal shrubs. The Coulter pines (called “penny pines”) have been planted over the years, and are native to the area. Though some shade will be found, most of the hike is exposed to the sun. You should avoid hot summer days, or start early in the morning.
