Tumalo Mountain gets a “backcountry” rating simply because it has no visible trail in winter. Otherwise this is a great, straightforward little climb up to one of the best views in the Three Sisters country. You can do the trip in about 4 to 5 hours. Its location is advantageous for a number of reasons. Because it’s the only conical butte besides Mount Bachelor across the road, it’s hard to get lost on its flanks. What’s more, it’s right across the road from the Mount Bachelor Ski area, giving nonskiers in the group a chance to coordinate a day of snowshoeing with their friends’ desire to go skiing. Most of the scenic photographs you see in Mount Bachelor catalogs were taken from the top of this little mountain. In less than 2 hours of climbing this gradually sloping butte, you’ll face dramatic views of the Three Sisters mountains as well as a panoramic view of Oregon’s high plateau.
