Babbish Gulch

Loop • 10 mi • 0 ft

While the Sunlight Mountain Ski Resort has four lifts for downhill skiing and charges a daily fee, they also maintain just over 10.0 miles of backcountry cross-country ski/snowshoe trails that are available to everyone at no charge. The trailhead begins at the resort, and the lower loop is groomed and maintained throughout the season. The trail runs to the east for the first 0.5 mile along the relatively flat Old Fourmile Road, which turns into Williams (Road) Trail. Here is where it becomes steeper and starts climbing uphill to the south. The loop follows a summertime horseback/llama path and is a combination of moderate up- and downhill climbs with a wide, well-marked trail, surrounded by groves of aspen and pine trees. You’ll see plenty of tree squirrels and even an occasional blue grouse along the trail. The tree stands are thick and mature—providing a good windbreak even when the weather is blustery. A lot of smaller ungroomed and unmarked trails inside this main loop cut diagonally off the main trail if you’re looking for shortcuts that are not crowded! Surface quality: Lower Trail loop groomed and maintained by Sunlight Ski Resort. Upper Trail ungroomed but often tracked by skiers/ snowshoers. Avalanche danger: Low.
