Mount Marcy from Upper Works Trail - Tahawus New York Snowshoe Trails

Mount Marcy is the tallest mountain in New York State, and because of its remoteness, its ruggedness, and its alpine summit, it is a difficult winter climb. Unlike most other Adirondack peaks, Marcy has a distinct tree line with a summit that is completely exposed. Conditions can vary greatly between the foot of the mountain and its top, where the weather can get quite blustery without even trying very hard. If the visibility is poor for whatever reason, it can be more than just an inconvenience—many winter hikers have lost their way and descended the wrong side of the summit. This is an excursion that is best done in a minimum of two days—allow three days if you don’t want to push yourself. There are lean-tos in abundance along the route, especially around Flowed Lands and Lake Colden. The route passes a number of well-known landmarks, and it is perhaps the most scenic approach to the mountain. Beyond Lake Colden is an exceptionally beautiful winter climb.
