Mountain Lake - Mount Constitution Loop - Orcas Island

Loop • 7 mi • 1500 ft

A strenuous, 7-mile loop that climbs past lakes to the glorious summit of Mount Constitution, along its airy ridgetop, and back to Mountain Lake. In contrast to the easy strolls you’ll find in other parts of Moran State Park, this hike will give you a good workout, along with a sampling of the park’s lakes, streams, and glorious views from the summit of Mount Constitution. While large sections of the route are level, you’ll also have to contend with a steep climb of nearly 1,500 feet to the summit, making this one of the more strenuous trails in the park. Sure, you can drive to the top, but sometimes views earned by getting there on foot are just that much more satisfying.

Hiked the loop counterclockwise - from Mountain Lake up to Twin Lakes, then up the east side of Mt. Constitution, down the ridge toward Little Summit, and back down to the Mountain Lake trailhead. That's the way I'd recommend it - the trail up the east side is steep, but pretty smooth. The drop from Little Summit back down to Mountain Lake is a much rougher rock-and-root scramble, so I'm glad we didn't go up that way. Interesting to see how many trees are down along the ridge, especially near the junction with the Cold Springs trail. Some areas, seemed like more trees on the ground than standing. Asked a ranger and was told it's primarily storm damage, as they get some pretty high winds in the winter. Overall great hike and superb views.

Beautiful Day, View, and Trail perfection. My oldest son and I went summitted on 11/4 approaching from West and decending on east side of Mt. Constitution to Mountain Lake. Next time we will camp and make a weekend of it.
