Saddle Mountains Trail

Various • 3 mi • 718 ft

Spring comes early to the Saddle Mountains, and easiest to access is the eastern part of the 50-mile-long range, bisected by the Columbia River. This is isolated, lonesome country, where you can hike cross-country along the crest of the broad ridge with easy ups and downs as far as time and energy allow. Enjoy sprawling views to the Columbia River and beyond. Even in a cold spring, by late April flowers are beginning to emerge from the ground. From the road, you can hike to and explore rocky outcroppings and towers of basalt, splashed with vivid lichens. Game trails go everywhere, and the country is so open it is almost impossible to get lost. You will occasionally run into private land, so respect any posted signs you may encounter. You can walk the road or ramble cross-country—with care.
