Roxy Ann Peak

OutAndBack • 3 mi • 573 ft

Driving up Hillcrest Road, with Roxy Ann Peak rising immediately above, it’s hard to figure how a 1.5-mile trail and loop road could fit unto such a tiny area. When you get on the trail and look up at the peak, however, it suddenly looks very, very big. Highlight: This hike climbs the brushy little dome-shaped mountain that rises directly behind the city of Medford.

Decent trail very close to town. The proximity makes it simple to come up here in the afternoons/evenings and get in a quick hike or ride. The hike to the peak and back down can be performed via gravel roads or one of several smaller trails that wind around the side of the mountain. Personally, I like to bike up to the top, then take one of the smaller trails back down, which gives about a mile or so of some decent singletrack with occasional switchbacks. Watch your speed since there are some decently chunky rocks in the path that can mess you up. Overall, the main draw is the closeness to town. I live near highway 62 and I can get to the trailhead in less than 15 minutes.

Good exercise/training hill. Start below the trailhead and/or traverse the north route to the summit first. When you come back down, take a right at the summit "Y" to follow the south-face trail back down. This will give you an extra bit of trail distance, and an extended view of Mt. Shasta/Mt. Ashland.
