Ptarmigan Peak - Mazama Washington Climbs

Just a stone’s throw to Canada, Ptarmigan Peak is one of the highest summits of the northern Pasayten Wilderness. Ptarmigan is flagrantly lopsided with gradual southwest slopes encircling a sheer and cavernous northeast cirque. In contrast to the gentle crest, the precipice to the east is dizzying. To the northeast of the summit, Ptarmigan Lake nestles at the base of rippling grooves speckled with occasional ice patches. The scramble of Ptarmigan Peak is primarily an extended backpacking trip with a simple walk-up to the summit added on. Yet the approach over Tatoosh Buttes and Tamarack Ridge reveals vast unenclosed alpine meadows where the sky is as big as creation. It is difficult to find such a great hulk of a mountain that is so lenient. Moreover, it is a shame to hike all the way in to high meadows and not spend enough time to relish in and explore the area. Added gifts are the striking views of the rutted north faces of Osceola, Lago, and Carru right next door.
