Hock Mountain - Newhalem Washington Climbs

Positioned on the Chelan crest less than 2 miles southwest of Twisp Pass, Hock Mountain lies at the head of the South Fork Twisp River. The north face of Hock is steep granite rock, but the western slope is wooded and moderate. Nearby Twisp Mountain, Lincoln Butte, and Stiletto Peak form a series of high points that surround Twisp Pass. The pass itself is noted for its gardens, glacier-smoothed boulders, dramatic rock peaks, and views down into Bridge Creek and across to Mounts Goode and Logan. This area is dotted with larch trees and there are also old lookout sites steeped in history. Hock is on the southern and western boundary of the Twisp Pass region, yet just southeast of SR 20, the North Cascades Scenic Highway. Thus Hock suffers some of the convergence zone weather features of so-called “Rainy Pass,” but the aspect to the east gives way to the dry and boundless Chelan territory.
