Baker Hot Springs

Unspecified • 0 mi • 0 ft

Includes: Park Butte. A pool often brimming with bathers, framed by evergreens, at the end of a short path. Swimwear recommended when others are present. Users have dug a soaking pool at Baker out of a sandy bank. The pool is around 25 feet across and 3 feet deep. Natural mineral water bubbles up from the bottom at 110 degrees F and cools as it disperses. The water is quite murky and has a sulphur odor, but that doesn’t faze the aficionados who come for a soak. Unless you feel like sharing your cozy cocoon, try the early mornings or the off-season months. Warning: Lab tests currently show high counts of E. coli in the water year-round. This constitutes a serious health hazard. It’s not likely to improve, as there are too many soakers and not enough flow to cleanse the pool. The Forest Service discourages people from using this site.

I thoroughly enjoy these hot springs. Easy walk, wouldn't call it a hike. It is so accessable it sometimes attracts undesirable soakers; people looking for a late night party atmosphere in the woods. But in the afternoon and evening it is not uncommon to find families and friendly adults enjoying the springs. But seriously late at night and wee hours of the morning it sometimes becomes not so family friendly. After 12:30 or 1 am I have seen sex acts and drug use (mostly inhaled or pills) at these springs. Rangers have been know to patrol these springs to limit this type of activity. Don't get me wrong, I have spent the whole night at the pools and never seen another sole or just a friendly respectful couple or two. Still one of my favorite "go to" destinations to escape.
