Malad Gorge State Park - Twin Falls Idaho Hikes

This 652-acre state park is located at an elevation of 3,270 feet, making for a good early or late season excursion. The basalt of the Malad Gorge was formed by lava flows and the canyon itself by melting glacier run-off. The waterfall at Devil’s Washbowl has retreated 2.5 miles over the millennia, carving the canyon you see. The side canyons at Alcove Lake and Woody’s Cove were created by two similar waterfalls. The Big Wood River flows through the Malad Gorge to meet the Snake River just north of Hagerman Valley. Among birds present in the gorge are canyon wrens, swallows, doves, kestrels, redtail hawks, and golden eagles. Mammals in the park include cottontails, jackrabbits, coyotes, and mule deer.
