Gannett Peak - Wyoming Highpoint

Highpoint rank by height: 5th. In addition to the two routes listed here, it is possible to access Gannett (GAN-it) Peak via the Ink Wells Trail/Glacier Trail. This access is quite expensive due to the cost of permits required to cross the Wind River Indian Reservation. It is also possible to have outfitters pack your climbing gear into and back out of the high camp of the eastern approach (Dubois) or to Indian Pass on the western approach (Pinedale). Contact the Dubois or Pinedale Chamber of Commerce for the particulars of these approaches. Bring along industrial strength mosquito repellant. The mosquitoes in this area are really bad ju-ju. The western approach contains some really fine midrange rock climbs, e.g., Ellingwood Peak (a.k.a. Harrower Peak), fifteen pitches rated 5.6; Mt. Sacagawea; and Fremont Peak. The eastern approach, while longer, provides you with a shorter summit day (and better chance of reaching the highpoint). The scenery on this approach is spectacular. Having done this highpoint from both the eastern and western approaches, I suggest the eastern (Dubois) as the preferred access.
