Black Point Fissures - Lee Vining California Hikes

This cross-country adventure explores a high-desert volcanic cone in search of bizarre box canyons in miniature. As you gain elevation, you also soon gain sight of Black Point’s summit, capped with hard, ochre-colored basalt rock. Aim for it. As you rise higher, stark, stupendous vistas expand southward over Mono Lake, eastward into the Great Basin desert, and west and southwest along the rugged crest of the Sierra Nevada. Shadows and bursts of light from ever-changing cloud formations play dramatically across the landscape.
