Scattered in New Mexico’s national forests are eleven hot springs where hikers can soak in naturally heated water bubbling out of the ground. One concentration of springs is located in the Jemez Mountains. McCauley Hot Spring is a delightful series of pools that lies in the Jemez backcountry on a bench above the East Fork of the Jemez River. An oval pool as big as a living room is the main attraction, but the warm outflow from the pond collects in three or four smaller rock tubs below. At about 92 degrees Fahrenheit, the water in every pool is delightfully relaxing.
