4th of July Road to Buckingham Campground

OutAndBack • 9.8 mi • 1426 ft

This lengthy tour into the wonderful Indian Peaks offers a rare chance in winter to spot bighorn sheep. This lengthy tour takes you into the beautiful Indian Peaks area. You will travel on a wide, gradually ascending road, ending at Buckingham Campground and the trailhead to Arapaho Pass and Diamond Lake. Don’t be tempted to continue up, as the avalanche danger is considerable on those trails. The road can be icy in the first half mile and it is frequently windswept. During periods, bighorn sheep can sometimes be spotted in winter on the warmer, south facing slopes of Bald Mountain, to the right of the trail. Eldora, once a charming place of tiny, summer cottages, now has several families that live year round in this cold and windy valley.
