Mount Major Trail

Loop • 3.4 mi • 1180 ft

The origin of the name Mount Major is a mystery. It does not refer to the size of the mountain, but it might describe the view. The open bed- rock summit perches over Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New Hampshire. There are other hikes at the southern end of the lake, but none with an expansive open top like Mount Major‘s.

I just started hiking for the first time last year and fell in love with it. Did some easy to moderate hikes before trying to conquer Mt Major. It's a moderate hike for a beginner or someone out of shape like myself. Near the top is the hardest with a few rock slab scrambles. Can be slippery on wet days so be cautious. Make sure to take a lunch, a camera and/or binoculars. the views from the top are 5 star and some of the best views in the state for such an easy hike. Will be doing Mt Major again this spring.

Fun hike, with some moderate sections. Slick rock, with great views though. Crowded, but a lot of room on top for lunch.
