Chuck Keiper Trail (Backpacking) - Renovo Pennsylvania Hikes

The Chuck Keiper Trail (CKT) is a 50-mile loop. The 2.5-mile-long East Branch Trail serves as a connector trail that essentially divides the CKT into two loops: the 33-mile West Loop, and the 22-mile East Loop. Either of these loops is an ideal weekend trip. The CKT is known for its isolation, wildlife, and scenery. It is also one of Pennsylvania’s more difficult trails. The southern sections of both loops traverse the plateau and have moderate terrain. The northern sections are much more difficult, as the trail climbs in and out of numerous gorges and glens of streams that have carved deep into the plateau. Some roadwalking has been eliminated by recent trail relocations. Terrain: Northern sections of both loops have several steep ascents and descents, ranging from 200 to 1,000 feet, often without switchbacks. Sidehill hiking in gorges along streams. Isolated hiking. Trail conditions: Trail is sufficiently blazed but often brushy on top of plateau. Several small stream crossings without bridges. Highlights: Views, scenic streams, rock outcrops and boulders, East Branch Natural Area, Cranberry Swamp Natural Area, Yost Run, cascades and waterfalls, and Fish Dam & Burns Run Wild Areas. This trail guide includes the East and West Loops.
