In northwestern Philadelphia, 8,700-acre Fairmount Park enfolds the spectacular setting and outdoor recreation along 7 miles and 1,800 acres of Wissahickon Creek Gorge. Despite its city location, the park is a remarkable island—wild and free from the intrusion of city skylines and traffic sounds. Cathedral forest, broad-flowing Wissahickon Creek, scenic outcrops, historic stone bridges, ruins that date to the 1700s, and a battle site from the American Revolution contribute interest. Hikers, cyclists, joggers, and equestrians explore an exciting network of trails. Forbidden Drive (closed to vehicles) and an interlocking network of color-coded trails invite a variety of round-trip, shuttle, and loop tours. The featured two loops utilize Forbidden Drive and the Orange Trail, traveling the banks of Wissahickon Creek. Special attractions: Ancient hardwood forest, Wissahickon Creek and its side drainages, rhododendron and wildflowers, fall foliage, wilderness solitude.
