Astraddle Kittatinny Ridge in eastern Pennsylvania, this 2,380-acre, private nonprofit sanctuary has been proclaimed the best site in the nation for watching the fall migration of predatory birds. Between mid-August and mid-December, an average of 20,000 eagles, ospreys, hawks, and falcons ride the winds south. The spectacle draws visitors from around the world. Superb vistas, seasonal rhododendron and laurel blooms, an unusual periglacial boulder field, and a museum and art gallery further recommend a visit to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. A series of short trails explore the sanctuary and offer access to the Appalachian Trail. Two hikes of varying difficulty may be toured separately or joined together to view skyline, woods, and a white flow of rocks. Special attractions: Ridge and valley vistas, fall migration of raptors, spring migration of warblers, site of a gravity railroad, native wildflower/habitat garden, museum/gallery.
