Uncanoonuc, North Peak

OutAndBack • 1.4 mi • 700 ft

The Uncanoonucs,North and South, are softly shaped twin mountains prominently visible from Manchester and its immediate suburbs. Allegedly, the name Uncanoonuc derives from a Native American term for what male cartographers traditionally name such alluring double peaks. Whatever the derivation, the natural environment of Uncanoonuc North offers an outstanding hiking experience. Once off the road and into the woods, the backcountry atmosphere of this suburban summit quickly excludes any reminder that you’re still within sight of New Hampshire’s largest city. Special attractions: A sense of remote mountain hiking within sight of the state's largest city. Fine views of Goffstown, the Merrimack Valley, and miles of mountains beyond.

i hike this about 2-3 times per month. a great kike that does not take up a ton of time. It can be done in an hour. This is a good one for the winter as well. The view is better in the winter when there are no leaves on the trees.

Properly located at 42.9897°N, 71.6049°W, this quick little mountain is a nice hike, out-and-back or over-the-top. There are several trails on this mountain, including the steep, short trail detailed in this guidebook. For more trails, run Uncanoonuc Mountain through a search engine. One known gentler climb is available starting at Uncanoonuc Mountain Perennials located at 452 Mountain Road, Goffstown NH. The summit view at this high foliage time was predominantly of the South Peak spiked with modern day transmission towers. The climb was short (2 hours over-the-top) but invigorating, just don't forget the bug spray!
