Fox Island Park

This is a loop trail along wooded dune to the marsh overlook and back. When the Wisconsin glacier began its retreat more than 10,000 years ago, wind shaped a sand dune rising 40 feet high in the heart of a sluice that carried away glacial meltwaters. That dune is at the heart of Fox Island Park, a 600-acre county park that today is the largest continuous woodland in Allen County. Almost half the park is protected as a state nature preserve. A marsh, wetlands, meadows, a peat bog, and the surrounding dune forest create varied habitat for wildlife and an abundance of wild plants. Nearly 200 species of birds have been seen at Fox Island. The forest features black oak trees along the upper dune; white oak, walnut, and black cherry trees along the dune slopes; and cottonwood, sycamore, and willow trees in the bottomland near the marshes and bogs. Fox Island has well-groomed and well-marked trails, which get a lot of use during the summer season. Special Attractions: a bog and marsh.
