Newport News Park Trails - Newport News Virginia Hikes

At 8,000-plus acres, Newport News Park is the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi, though large swaths are essentially untrammeled. The loop described here takes in both historical and ecological landmarks. It works well as an introduction for campers—or anyone else—looking to explore the outlying trail network. The remains of an extensive network of Confederate trenches— and a few Union rifle pits—are visible at numerous points along this hike, some of the best-preserved Civil War earthworks anywhere.
