Appalachian Trail: Thornton Gap to Hogback Overlook - Luray Virginia Hikes

This stretch of the AT makes a pleasant hike through the varied forests of Shenandoah National Park. The south-to-north route provides a leisurely stroll dominated by gentle downward slopes with only a few steep ascents. As the trail crosses over the low peaks it passes through thickly wooded areas of large old oaks, crowded by slender young oaks and maples. The AT intersects with Skyline Drive at several points throughout this section, so shortening the hike is a viable option. Natural history features: Thornton Gap; Beahms Gap; Elkwallow Gap.
