This hike guarantees a workout as it takes you up over 1300 feet from Reeds Gap to the northernmost ridge of Three Ridges, then down even further, dropping 3000 feet to meet Tye River. Several rock slides make the section even more strenuous. However, your efforts will not go unrewarded. As you stop to catch your breath, and you often will, you'll be treated to panoramic views of towering mountains like The Priest, and deep, rolling valleys including those of Harpers Creek and Tye River. There is also a variety of wildflowers throughout this section, most blooming from late April to early May. Look for trillium, wild geraniums, and several types of violets, casting purple, lavender, and yellow blossoms along the trail. A camera, extra film, and plenty of water are musts. Binoculars will also be appreciated. Be sure to save a few frames of film to capture Tye River's foaming ripples and cascades at the southern end of the hike.
