Bois Brule River - Brule Wisconsin Fly Fish Waters

Presidents fish the “real” Brule. You can too. Ever think of Ulysses S. Grant as an angler? He was the first of a handful of presidents that include Cleveland, Coolidge, Hoover, and Eisenhower to fish the Bois Brule, that river of many faces first known for its large brook trout and now for its browns, steelhead, and salmon. You may fish it as well, canoeing a dozen or so miles on the upper river casting for native brookies, battling early and late season snows for salmon and steelhead, seducing fat browns from their summer lies beneath sweepers that swing in the current. This river (Burnt Woods in French) differs considerably from the Brule which rises in Michigan and forms the border with Wisconsin for several miles before joining the Menominee which empties into Lake Michigan above Green Bay. The Bois Brule gathers its waters from a boggy height of land in the middle of Douglas County and flows northeast through a state forest, established in 1907, before emptying into Lake Superior. Species: Brook, brown, rainbow, Chinook, Coho. Angling methods: spin, and fly-fishing.
