Gabrieleno Trail from Red Box through the Arroyo Seco

Shuttle • 15 mi • -3500 ft

One of the best, most scenic singletracks in all of Southern California, the section of the Gabrieleno Trail from Red Box to Switzer's and through the Arroyo Seco is a very popular shuttle ride. It has a little bit of everything: smooth sections of trail, boulder fields, switchbacks, stream crossings, exposure, technical climbing and technical descending. The scenery ranges from sycamore and oak-filled streamside habitat to waterfalls. And, oh yes, there's plenty of poison oak.

Make sure to take Tom Sloan Saddle, which is at the top of the ridge. It is badly sign posted and you may end up taking the Tom Sloan Trail - which is an overgrown mountain path and very tough going ...... but eventually takes you up to the fire road.

Ther are only a very small few rides I have done in the past ten years of my competitive dh and xc racing career that I would bestow a 5 star rating to. This is one. All singletrack, all the way. Tight and ugly to fast and furios, wet and muddy to dry and packed. Hell, it even has some hike a bike through the stream on a heavy day. If Gene Siskell had ridden a bike and not died of a heart attack, I'm sure he'd give it two posthumous thumbs up!!
