South Saint Vrain Canyon might be the finest of all the classic canyon climbs on the Front Range, and there are lots of ’em. Ascend relatively moderate grades to the sublime Peak-to-Peak Highway, skirt the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, and roll into the town of Estes Park. End the ride with a rewarding canyon descent. Terrain: One long, gradual climb, and some additional significant climbs on the Peak-to- Peak Highway, as well as on exit from Estes Park. Enjoy a long, gradual descent back down to Lyons. Nothing too steep, but a tough loop nonetheless. Traffic and hazards: Most of this route uses good-quality roads with nice, wide lanes and rideable shoulders. One notable exception: U.S. Highway 36 just east of Estes Park lacks a good shoulder, but it is not a deal breaker. Bike shops are scarce, so haul the necessary equipment.
