This ride travels through the beautifully rugged woodlands surrounding the Wykoff Run Natural Area. The route is actually a series of cross-country ski trails through the heart of the Quehanna Wild Area, which encompasses 50,000 acres of some of the most remote and untouched land in Pennsylvania. It wasn’t always untouched—loggers cut every inch of forest, fires burned the rich soil layer, and the land was left for dead. But Mother Nature has an uncanny way of breathing the life back into almost anything, and this woodland couldn’t be a finer example of her handiworks. A divine ride in itself, this outstanding loop can be linked with Big Springs Draft to create a killer, full-day adventure. But let’s start with the armchair ride through this route. From the trailhead, a great warm-up takes you along the rolling Dave Lewis doubletrack. After you cross Reactor Road, the riding gets better. Four miles of the most pristine singletrack floats through beautiful woodland. A short link on doubletrack along the Sanders Trail leads to more outstanding singletrack, which takes you to the remote Gore Vista Trail. It’s not uncommon to sit here for hours, communing with the natural world and recharging you spiritual connections. Highlights: long sections of stellar technical singletrack, beautiful pure stands of white birch trees, true solitude, the commanding Gore Vista, great wildlife viewing, one of the most remote woodland areas in Pennsylvania. Tread: rugged, rocky, technical singletrack, grassy old woods and forest road.
