There are a variety of trails in this 6,500-acre state park, located in the northern half of the Highlands, only 50 miles north of Manhattan. The rolling terrain is crisscrossed by forest roads, bridle paths, and nineteenth-century railroad beds, and is sprinkled with several picturesque lakes. If you wish to get off the trails and into the water, Canopus Lake offers a beautiful sandy beach and boating facilities. This state park offers something for everyone. The four trail systems described in this chapter provide a wide range of riding opportunities. You can cruise on wide, hard-packed dirt roads and blast down some awesome singletrack descents. This wild and heavily wooded countryside consists of deep forests of tall hemlocks and maple stands among numerous lakes and marshes. Deer are numerous, and beaver can be spotted in the swamps. The trail runs along the railroad beds built in 1862 to carry ore from the Sunk Mine to the Greenwood mine in Harriman Park. Located approximately 50 miles north of Manhattan, about 8 miles east of the historic town of Cold Spring. The terrain is rolling with some short, steep hills.
