This eastern Washington segment of the John Wayne Pioneer Trail is an adventure starting near the eastern terminus of the John Wayne Pioneer Trail West. It passes through several geological zones, some with dramatic scenery and varied wildlife. The trail is undeveloped, has some difficult surfaces, and is sometimes confusing to navigate. One of the longest detours on the trail occurs on country roads around the 46.3-mile gap from Royal City Junction to Warden. Trail travel requires a prearranged permit. There’s snow for skiing and snowshoeing several weeks of the year—mostly from the Idaho border westward about 20 miles. Try fishing along the Department of Fish and Wildlife lands near the trail.
