The Deep Creek Lake area has been a popular tourist spot since buddies Warren G. Harding, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone went camping at the foot of Muddy Creek Falls in 1919 in what’s now Swallow Falls State Park. The area still offers major outdoor attractions with its seven state parks, the highest peak in Maryland, and, of course, various lakes and streams. But there are some surprises south of the border: thriving “Pennsylvania Dutch” communities, high-end glassware, and a subarctic relict. It’s a popular summer colony—many folks maintain cottages or condos for the season—but a new interest in skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports (plus an annual average of 17 more inches of snow than Fairbanks, Alaska) has made this a popular four-season destination. Please note, however, that while the outdoors is always open, many indoor attractions, especially Amish areas, are closed on Sunday. The detailed itinerary in this eTrail is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.
