The North Channel: Spanish River to Aird Island - Spanish Ontario Sea Kayak Tours

The North Channel is partially divided from the rest of Lake Huron by the islands of the northern rim of the Niagara Escarpment, including Drummond and Manitoulin Islands, which are made primarily of dolomite. On the north side of the channel, however, the geology is that of the Canadian Shield, and the weathered granite also seen on the east side of Lake Superior predominates. Between Serpent River and the Bay of Islands on the north side of Manitoulin are many small island groups. Although the area around Killarney has many cottages, the Whales-back Channel is still relatively undeveloped and a great place to explore by kayak. The islands near the mouth of the Spanish River (including Green Island) are composed of steep granite, and the pretty scenery makes the islands a good destination for a day paddle and a good introduction to the North Channel. A trip around Aird Island is also good day trip for those who want a longer paddle.
