The river varies in width from 50 to 1,000 feet and up to 150 feet in depth. The wind and weather have aided the rock outcroppings and sheer cliffs in developing a unique character not seen elsewhere in Wisconsin in such an overwhelming display. The softer elements, being more submissive to the weathering, have left behind intricate and gargoylic sculptures of the harder rock.
