The lake was created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam Across Sunday Gulch. In 1921, this unique lake became part of the newly-created Custer State Park. In 1895,A Victorian-style hotel opened its doors on the shores of Sylvan Lake. The hotel was a Popular site for many Black Hills vacationers until it burned to the ground in 1935. The current hotel was opened in 1937, and a new wing was added in 1991.
