South Carolina Outdoors - South Carolina Outdoor Recreation
South Carolina and its great trails have long been overshadowed by the state’s better-known neighbors. But with three separate geographic regions all served by the local cities of Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston, South Carolina has great destinations from end-to-end for any outdoor enthusiast.
The Appalachian Mountains cross the northwest corner of the state, an easy day trip for residents of Greenville and Spartanburg, who can enjoy the great fly-fishing on the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River and camp at one of South Carolina’s finest campgrounds at Burrells Ford. Great hiking trails cross the same territory as well, like the Chattooga Trail, Kings Mountain Trail, Table Rock Mountain State Park Trail, and the long-distance Foothills Trail, great for day hiking one of its many segments or backpacking its entire length.
There is plenty of good mountain biking in the central plains around the capital, Columbia, on trails like the Harbison Loop, Firebreak Trail, Midlands Mountain Trail, and the Sesqui Mountain Bike Trail. Along the Atlantic Ocean, South Carolina’s spectacular coast needs no introduction. Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island, and Charleston all make great places for a quick getaway, either with the whole family or just a quiet romantic escape for two. And any time of year, Charlotte, North Carolina and Augusta and Savannah, Georgia can be reached for an easy day trip or via a scenic drive.
