Sierra Designs Alpha Convertible Tent Review

Sierra Designs Alpha Convertible Tent Review
The Alpha 3 convertible tent is quite roomy, featuring 46 square feet of internal space and a 75-inch internal height, which is much higher than the average tent. The tent is erected with three lightweight poles. The tent comfortably sleeps three adults and includes a large vestibule area for stashing equipment. The tent's convertible feature offers an additional pole and fly layer that enables the tent to stand up to the harshest winter conditions. The tent's full pack weight is 8 lb. and 4 oz., including the fourth season material.

Perks

Sierra Designs offers a "Fast Pack Footprint" to protect the underside of the tent. This can be used with just the fly and the poles to make a light trail shelter for summer use, and it weighs less than 5 lb. The tent also features a "Stash Door" that folds away into a pouch. The tent's dye-free upper is an excellent example of Sierra Design's commitment to environmentally responsible products.

Sacrifices

The tent's full pack weight is a little heavier than other three-person tents, but this is partly reflected in the optional winter additions. This is also an unnecessary addition for campers who do not camp in the colder seasons.

Bottom Line

This tent is one of Sierra Design's most popular models for several reasons. It has a reasonable price tag and a thoughtful design, and it offers an excellent balance for those seeking an all-season tent that works just as well in the summer as it does on a mountain ascent.
