Black Diamond Quantum Pack Review

Black Diamond Quantum Pack Review
An exceptional alpine climbing backpack, the Black Diamond Quantum costs $230 as of 2009. The Quantum is available in 45- and 55-liter capacity models, both of which weigh around 4 pounds. The Quantum is top-loading, with a full-length access zipper along the side. The pack is constructed of laminated and silicone-embedded nylon, with numerous attachment points and compression straps on the exterior. The inside of the pack includes a pocket for hydration reservoirs. All of these features are supported by a single Y-shaped aluminum stay in the pack's internal frame.

Perks

The Black Diamond Quantum is a streamlined pack that handles exceptionally well when scrabbling up narrow passages. The siliconized nylon creates a pack that sheds water easily. The Quantum can be fully disassembled into its component parts, allowing you to take the top compartment on shorter day hikes or even remove the foam back padding for use as a camp seat.

Sacrifices

The treated nylon makes for great protection from the elements, while the padded hip-belt provides exceptional comfort. But these specialized features also add to the Quantum's overall weight, making it inappropriate for lightweight aficionados. Those looking for external storage, a separate bottom compartment or even external water bottle holders will be disappointed by the Quantum's focus on its streamlined profile.

Bottom Line

The Quantum is a specialized alpine and climbing pack that can handle all the rigors of the rocks, but may be less suitable for those searching for a more general use pack.
