Sierra Designs Lightning Tent Review

Sierra Designs Lightning Tent Review
Sierra Designs offers several models of the Lightning XT, but the two-person version is the most versatile and the most emblematic of the model. It combines the lightweight, backpack-readiness of the one-person model, while having more room, just like the three- and four-person models. The Lightning has two doors, allowing an individual entrance for each camper. The Lightning XT provides 30 square feet of floor space and a peak height of 41 inches. Additional storage comes in the vestibules on either side, one 14 square feet, the other 6 square feet. The Lightning XT packs down to a little under 4 lbs., before including the stakes. It's lightweight due in part to the construction, which is predominantly breathable mesh.

Perks

Two doors for two campers are not found in enough backpacking tents and much appreciated in the Lightning XT. The roominess provides plenty of storage space and works well for taller hikers. The Lightning also does not suffer from the condensation problems of many tents, since most of the body is breathable mesh, allowing good air flow and creating a wonderful place for star-gazing.

Sacrifices

The Lightning has an innovative pole design that binds the poles not just at the end points but also at the junctions with other poles, keeping the surface of the tent taut. This makes for exceptional stability but also makes the tent frustrating to set up for unpracticed campers who are used to more orthodox designs. The nearly all-mesh construction is not suitable for colder conditions.

Bottom Line

Sierra Designs Lightning tent works best for summer backpackers looking to keep light without sacrificing comfort. The Sierra Designs Lightning has a roomy interior not often found in a tent less than 4 lbs.
