FRS & GMRS Motorola Two-Way Radio Review

FRS & GMRS Motorola Two-Way Radio Review
Motorola Two-Way Radios are walkie-talkies designed for use in marine, camping and general outdoor recreation as well as any number of family and group activities. Motorola FRS and GMRS Two-Way radios have maximum ranges of up to 35 miles and operate on a hybrid platform of 22 combined FRS and GMRS channels. Optional features depending on the model include: weather channels, voice-activated operation (VOX), privacy codes, call tones, auto squelch and either AA, AAA, or rechargeable NiMH batteries.

Perks

Two-Way Radio Communication
Two-Way Radio Communication

Motorola FRS and GMRS radios are compatible with all other brand two-way radios. Two-way radios are an effective and recommended communication tool to have when off the beaten trail. When out of cell phone range or when going on an outdoor adventure in groups, having Motorola radios will allow everyone to stay in contact with each other and communicate in case of emergency.

Sacrifices

On extended trips away from electricity, the NiMH battery-type Motorolas last a little longer, although you'll have no way to recharge.

Motorola Two-Way Radios have a removable belt clip, which during physical activity likes to become dislodged--causing a possible loss of your radio. There is no good place to attach a lanyard.

Bottom Line

The effective range in a backcountry environment for all Motorola FRS and GMRS Two-Way Radios is on average 1 to 2 miles; the maximum range can only be achieved in flat and open terrain. Stick to the lower-priced models for hiking, backpacking and most outdoor activities.
