Garmin Hiking GPS Review

Garmin Hiking GPS Review
Knowing where you're at, and where you're going, on a trail is essential for safety and peace of mind. Garmin, a leader in the GPS industry, has a full line of hiking GPS units, including mapping and radio units with GPS. The Garmin Oregon Series not only has the features hikers want, but the Oregon 400t was also "Backpacker" Magazine's Editor's Choice for 2009 for best hiking GPS. The 400t features a touch screen for easy navigating on the trail, mapping addition ability and both trail and road routing. It also has hiker-friendly bonuses like a compass, an altimeter and seasonal information. It also is waterproof.

Perks

In addition to the attributes you would expect from a good hiking GPS unit, the Garmin 400t has a wireless sharing capability and the ability to download geocaching information directly to the unit. You can also customize the unit by adding points of interest and additional maps. The 3-D viewer can be a real plus for accurate viewing of topo maps and the rugged exterior helps protect your investment.

Sacrifices

Although the 400t claims to have a very readable screen, some users report problems seeing the 3-D maps in direct sunlight. The unit takes two AA batteries which last 16 hours, but the unit itself is not rechargeable. And you do end up paying for all the perks: the suggested retail price is $499.99.

Bottom Line

The Garmin 400t is a top-of-the-line hiking GPS unit with all the expected features--and more. In addition, the unit has the Garmin name behind it and the quality that goes with it. If you can afford it, this GPS unit is a great choice.
