Perks
Turbo Ice Screws have a patented taper at the teeth end of the screw, enabling them to be placed quickly and efficiently by climbers on lead. The hanger is easily gripped in mittens or gloves and is low profile, enabling you to easily rack the screws on a bent gate carabiner and quickly remove them to place in the ice while on lead.
Sacrifices
The Turbo is Black Diamond's less expensive ice screw. While the hanger is easy to grab, the handle must be rotated 360 degrees to turn the screw into the ice; this gets tiring while on steep leads. Black Diamond's Express screws, with the flip-out crank knobs, are much easier to place.
Bottom Line
Black Diamond Turbo ice screws are must-have gear for any aspiring ice climber. Black Diamond screws are easy enough to place and secure enough that at least a fall on ice won't turn into a ground fall.
