Assateague Kayak Review

Assateague Kayak Review
The Impex Assateague is a large paddler's dream boat. This composite sea touring kayak belongs to a four-model Specialty Touring line, each model catering to a specific paddler size and skill set. The Assateague is 17 feet, 10 inches long, 22.5 inches wide and 13.75 inches deep. Six-footers of 175 to 275 pounds find it easy to enter the 17-by-32-inch cockpit.

Assateague retails in 2010 for $3,299, plus or minus, depending upon layup, customization and accessories. Layups, or material composing the hull and decks, impact boat weight. Assateague comes in Kevlar (fiberglass, 6 pounds), carbon Kevlar (fiberglass, 5 to 6 pounds), K-Lite (fiberglass, 4 pounds), standard fiberglass (59 pounds) and Expedition Glass (fiberglass + 6 pounds).

From the Scott Canoe Ltd. family of boat manufacturers, Impex Kayaks is located in Ontario, Canada and Asheville, North Carolina.

Perks

The Assateague's V hull is stabile, but this kayak moves: 10 km per hour is not unusual. Increased rocker (hull bendability) gives good response to reasonably scary waves. The retractable skeg allows you to react to sea and weather conditions. The back bulkhead is angled, expediting draining after wet exits. Controls are out of the way: deck accoutrements include rescue and carry handles, compass recess, bungees for on-deck stowage and sealed cargo space.

Sacrifices

The seat position is low, good for stability but difficult when it comes to rolls. Many owners find the Immersion Research back bands and seats uncomfortable to the point that they customize. The biggest complaint about this boat is that the Werner footpads do not serve big-footed paddlers.

Bottom Line

Impex Assateague is sturdy, well-made, reasonably priced and backed by a willing customer service department. If your body is large, this is the right kayak for your sea touring trips.
