Review of Leki Summit Trekking Poles

TylerFNall

Summit trekking poles by Leki are designed for hiking, trekking, and skiing. They are constructed of heat-treated aluminum with an "Ultra Sonic" finish that adds great strength and durability while minimizing weight. The postitive angle COR-TEC grips combine natural cork and rubber for a secure feel that won't give you blisters. They are three-section telescoping poles that extend up to 55 inches and compact down to 28.3 inches for easy packing and storage. And at 20.6 ounces, the Summit trekking poles won't weight you down on long hikes. They go for around $100 (in 2010) for a pair.

Perks

Leki developed an adjustable anti-shock system for the Summit poles that allow the user to set the spring to medium flex or completely off for steep uphill jaunts. They also feature carbide tips that flex up to 30 degrees to avoid damage to the pole shaft and wear and tear to the carbide tip.

Sacrifices

Due to their durable construction and anti-shock system, the Summit trekking poles are heavier than similar competitors' models, including REI and Black Diamond. Also, Leki places the anti-shock springs inside of the shaft making them hard to get to if repairs are needed or oil is needed to be applied to the spring for stiffness relief or to quiet squeaking sounds.

Bottom Line

The Leki Summit trekking poles are loaded with beneficial features and offered for a lower price than competitors' poles. They are recommended for any hiker or backpacker.
