Perks
THORLON technology makes these socks durable. Traveling weeks in Africa, then a short section on the Appalachian Trail, means these socks saw difficult terrain with constant abuse. The durability of these socks is appreciated. Constant washings against stones resulted in no wear, balling or snags. Most other socks would turn into car wash mitts, but these returned from the trip still in great shape.
Sacrifices
Fifteen bucks buys a pair of socks you don't replace, ever. That's great--if you can count on the socks to perform. The CoolMax technology turns into what feels like mashed potatoes when soaked with sweat, then hardens when taken off to dry. CoolMax technology deserves an "F" grade. The socks don't cause blisters, even when wet, but they make the trip less comfortable.
Bottom Line
Thorlo's website has rave customer reviews for these socks. Our adventure, however, made them fail. Everyday use is fine, but anything else is a mistake. THORLON is a winner, but the CoolMax technology has a ways to go to compete with plain wool socks.
