Magnetic ski roof racks have been developed as a cheap, versatile alternative to traditional ski racks. They use a combination of magnetism and suction cups to create an immovable hold on the roof of a vehicle with a smooth steel roof. Inno and Eton are the main manufacturers of magnetic roof racks, which are offered for around $120 (in 2010). Each rack measures 12 inches wide and 10 inches high and weighs 12 lbs. Most vehicles can accommodate two racks, increasing carrying capacity. Each rack holds two pairs of skis or one snowboard

Perks

Magnetic ski racks are easily removed and packed into the trunk of your car, so you do not have ski racks on your vehicle through the summer. Simply pull the suction lever and remove the racks. Magnetic ski racks come with locks and keys, so you need not worry about anyone ripping off your skis or snowboard while they attached to the racks.

Sacrifices

Due to their design, magnetic ski racks do not hold wide powder skis or wide snowboards, so they are limited in their carrying capacity. Also, magnetic ski racks are not recommended for vehicles with sunroofs. While the suction cups will hold to the glass, the magnets become useless and they may fall off.

Bottom Line

Magnetic ski racks are an inexpensive option that can be used on vehicles that are not compatible with traditional ski racks. They are recommended for any skier.
